2025 INDUSTRY OUTLOOK

Life sciences

Letter from our healthcare industry lead

In our 2024 outlook for the healthcare industry, Slalom shared our profound optimism in the path toward person-centered care. We predicted a slow but steady workforce recovery, advancements in hybrid care delivery, and new value creation from large, local datasets, leveraging AI to solve complex problems in a way that has not been technologically available until now.

We also challenged healthcare leaders “to systematically evaluate, and where appropriate, regenerate everything” from coverage policies to models of care.

No one could have predicted the turmoil we experienced in 2024. The nation halted to refocus on what we already knew: The US healthcare “system” is broken. We have a profound and unprecedented opportunity to make healthcare work for everyone.

Our 2025 outlook focuses on pragmatic opportunities to address barriers in our healthcare system—realistic solutions that can improve access to care, reduce burdens on the healthcare workforce, and create a more resilient and outcomes-driven healthcare industry.

As we look forward, our new challenge to Slalom employees, customers, and partners is to lead with courage. Historian Yuval Noah Harari writes that “creativity is often defined as the ability to recognize patterns and then break them.”

It takes courage to break long-standing patterns and drive systemic change. This is our tipping point. Let’s get started.

Sincerely,

Meera Kanhouwa, MD, MHA, FACEP

With AI and tech at the forefront, the life sciences industry is stepping into 2025 with a powerful focus on person-centered transformation.

This is a pivotal moment in the industry and our careers—an opportunity to move beyond the traditional one-size-fits-all approaches of the past and embrace a future poised to evolve more in the next five years than it has in the past century.

AI is changing every aspect of the life sciences industry. This catalyzing technology is unveiling new pathways to value throughout the entire value chain, from accelerated discovery and streamlined operations to resilient supply chains and data-driven sales growth. Still, at its core, this work remains profoundly personal—it’s about improving, and often saving, lives. The focus on person-centered care is stronger than ever with the rise of precision medicine and the unanswered questions of how to scale personalized therapies and experiences that bring new hope to millions.

Amid this transformative era, the change in the US government administration is expected to influence policy shifts that could impact regulatory priorities, reshape and ignite the landscape for mergers and acquisitions (M&A), and incentivize innovation—effects that could reverberate globally. We anticipate significant growth through M&A activity in 2025, and organizations will be wise to develop thoughtful integration plans to realize the full value of these deals.

Leaders must make future-focused decisions on technology platforms, invest in workforce upskilling, seek innovative ways to improve and leverage data, and navigate the complexities of modernizing analog, legacy systems and processes to operate in an increasingly digital industry.

Our 2025 outlook focuses on pragmatic opportunities to address current barriers in the life sciences sector—realistic solutions that can enhance research capabilities, streamline regulatory processes, and foster innovation for better health outcomes and experiences. Trends such as AI-driven drug discovery, lab automation, sustainable practices, and personalization are set to shape the future of life sciences.

As we look forward, we challenge Slalom employees, customers, and partners to lead with a fiercely person-centered, innovative approach to overcome past limitations and trailblaze a resilient, impactful future for life sciences. Let’s get started.
